Constituţia de la 1866 – o încercare de recitire

The purpose of this paper is to provide for a new, fresh look into the 1866 Romanian constitution: drawing on a long tradition of legal and political studies this rereading aims at uncovering the background responsible for its shaping, as well as the main challenges related to its enforcement, for almost half a century. The 1866 constitution thus becomes a pivotal point in the long conversation about law, liberty and individual rights, pointing to the future of the 20th century, with its terrible legacy of authoritarianism and democratic backsliding.
